In Service of Life: D. Melchior Nunes Carneiro Leitão 

This year marks the 450th anniversary of the establishment of the Diocese of Macau. To commemorate this milestone, the Diocesan Life Commission is launching the Defenders of Life – Short Film Series, hoping that through the history of the Diocese and the testimonies of our local community, we may rekindle awareness of the mission to uphold human dignity and defend life.

The first episode, “In Service of Life — D. Melchior Nunes Carneiro Leitão”, brings us back to the earliest days of the Diocese. In an era when poverty, illness, and social exclusion were widespread, the Church chose to shoulder the responsibility of caring for the vulnerable. It founded the St. Lazarus Leprosarium to shelter abandoned patients, and promoted charitable and medical works such as the Holy House of Mercy and St. Raphael Hospital. In doing so, the Church made the proclamation of “good news to the poor” a visible and concrete reality.
